# Total mode

View the total value for the selected period.

{% hint style="info" %}
User permission: **Query**

Without this permission, you can see the default view for this mode but can't change the analysis.
{% endhint %}

Use **Total** mode to view the total value for the selected period.

Unlike **Period** mode, **Total** mode displays only the total value and does not include cumulative values. Total mode is the simplest view of your data. It is particularly useful when multiple measures are selected because it provides a clear, uncluttered summary of your data.

{% hint style="success" %}
Use the **Measures** menu to add more measure columns to the grid.
{% endhint %}

### Summary view

Displays the total value for each period within the selected date range.

The grid contains the following columns:

* **Period:** Displays each period within the selected date range. For example, when you select **Rolling 12 Months**, the grid displays a row for each month in the rolling 12-month period.
* **Value:** Displays the total value for each period.

### Dimension view

Displays the total value for each entity in the selected dimension.

In this view, the **Properties** menu in the toolbar becomes available.

The grid contains the following columns:

* **Properties:** Displays the selected properties (such as **Code** and **Name**) for each entity. Use the **Properties** menu to select which properties to display. The available properties depend on the selected dimension.
* **Value:** Displays the total value for each entity across the selected period.

### Example

Use **Total** mode to view the total number of products sold this year to date (YTD):

1. Click **Mode** > **Total**.
2. Click the **Product** dimension.
3. Click **Measures** > **Quantity** and clear any other selected measures.
4. Click **Period** > **FYTD**.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://docs.phocassoftware.com/flex-modes/change-your-analysis/switch-modes/total-mode.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
